Carroll Estes and Theodore (Ted) Marmor each received the 2019 Robert M. Ball Award for Outstanding Achievements in Social Insurance:
Carroll Estes and Theodore (Ted) Marmor
Carroll L. Estes is one of the foremost innovative thinkers and educators on the interaction of social insurance with gender, race/ethnicity, and class issues, and she has used this work to inform policymaking in the fields of health, aging, and social insurance. Her career so far spans five decades, and Estes is now Professor Emerita of Sociology at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) where she founded and directed the campus-wide Institute for Health & Aging, and chaired the Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences in the School of Nursing.
For nearly half a century, Theodore (Ted) R. Marmor has shaped both scholarly and public understandings of social insurance and continues today to be an important voice in debates over health care reform, Medicare, and Social Security. Now a Professor Emeritus of Public Policy and Management at the Yale School of Management, as well as Professor of Political Science in the Department of Political Science and the Institution for Social and Policy Studies at Yale University, Marmor’s scholarship in social insurance is wide-ranging, path breaking, and extraordinarily influential.
The Award dinner and program took place in Washington, DC, on Thursday, June 27, 2019. The event was attended by nearly 200 guests from academia, public policy, and other fields. Several guests speakers helped to honor Ted Marmor and Carroll Estes for their lifelong dedication to social insurance education and policy research (see the Event Program tab below for videos).
Both Carroll and Ted continue to provide us with the vocabulary we need to regenerate social insurance for this new millennium.
