The National Academy of Social Insurance is now accepting applications for its 2021 Summer Internship programs. This is a paid internship for students interested in policy work in Washington, DC. Please take a moment to think about the talented young people you know—students, mentees, interns, and relatives—and forward this invitation to them so they might take advantage of this opportunity.

The National Academy of Social Insurance offers five distinct internship programs. The Merton C. Bernstein Internship on Social Insurance offers opportunities for outstanding graduate and upper division undergraduate students studying public policy, social policy, economics, insurance and risk management, or related subjects including health policy. Other internships focus specifically on health policy, disability policy, and long-term care and aging.

Why apply? Students in the Academy’s internship programs work with leading experts and policy developers. Interns are placed at various organizations in Washington, DC, where they will work full-time over the summer.* All interns will receive compensation (in 2020, all interns received a $4,500 honorarium).

Learn more and apply here. Details about requirements and who should apply to each program are on our website: https://www.nasi.org/internship-opportunities. (The Rashi Fein Internship in Health Policy program deadline is Friday, January 8, 2021. All other programs have a deadline of January 29.)

As part of the program, students participate in weekly seminars with Academy Members to help deepen knowledge of social insurance programs and current issues – including health equity, the impact of the pandemic, and more. Interns also have opportunities to join special events to connect with Academy Members.

"I knew a lot about Medicaid from the perspective of working families, but I had no idea about its impact on seniors and particularly the huge role it plays in long-term care. This was eye-opening and definitely helps me think about social insurance programs more broadly. I enjoyed the [weekly] seminars, which provided topics that we should be proficient in once we completed the internship. It helped me visualize social insurance as a structure, as opposed to a haphazard collection of legislation.”

* Our programs currently anticipate that interns will work at organizations in-person according to the organization’s protocols, and live in Washington, DC during the summer of 2021. The Academy will follow official public health guidelines as they are issued in the spring of 2021, and if necessary, transition to a virtual program (teleworking). Final arrangements will be discussed with each student selected for the program.
