Discussion Forum and Reception

With remarks by:

Former Massachusetts Governor Michael S. Dukakis & Former Treasury Secretary Lawrence H. Summers

This event is part of the Academy’s national series to improve understanding of the nation’s social insurance programs and how they are addressing – and could better address – the challenges posed by growing inequality. Professor Larry Summers will focus his remarks on secular stagnation and social insurance. Following remarks by former Governor Michael Dukakis, attendees are invited to join an open discussion moderated by the Academy’s CEO, William J. Arnone.

Social insurance has been an integral part of American life for more than 80 years, and arguably, will play an even bigger role as the population ages and automation, global competition, rising inequality, and other developments continue to transform the economy and create new risks for workers and their families. This will be a unique gathering and exchange of ideas among leading policy experts, business executives, and New England community leaders concerned about these issues.

About the National Academy of Social Insurance

Since its inception 30 years ago, the Academy has hosted convenings designed to provide rigorous inquiry and insights into the functioning of our nation’s social insurance programs and how they can continue to meet the changing needs of American families, employees, and employers. Participants in Academy events gain valuable takeaways, including the latest research findings in various areas of social insurance, who’s who in the field, and which organizations are most engaged in these issues.
